An Upstate evangelistic event that has resulted in more than 600 faith professions among teenagers will be held April 11 in Spartanburg.

Kirk Cameron, star of “Fireproof,” will speak at the Challenge 2010 youth crusade April 11 in Spartanburg.

The Challenge 2010 youth crusade, held over three nights last year, will be condensed into a one-night event at Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium and will feature celebrity speaker Kirk Cameron, star of the box-office hit “Fireproof” as well as the “Left Behind” motion picture series.

The event, sponsored by about 20 Upstate churches and the Carolina Pregnancy Center in Spartanburg, begins at 6 p.m. and is free to all comers. A praise band from Crossroads Baptist Church in Spartanburg will also be featured.

Rob Gouge, pastor of Stone Station Baptist Church in Roebuck, said Challenge 2010 is “an evangelistic outreach for young people to come to know Jesus Christ as their Savior.” Gouge said volunteers will be on hand to staff prayer rooms and serve as counselors.

Gouge said the event started eight years ago as a ministry of Zion Hill Baptist Church in Spartanburg under the leadership of pastor Keith Davis. It quickly became a multi-night event featuring speakers like evangelist Ken Freeman and, last year, a “strength team” that resulted in 185 faith decisions over three nights at Byrnes High School.
