Barbara G. Platt, wife of John V. Platt, director of missions for Columbia Metro Association, died April 17, 2010.
Barbara PlattBorn Nov. 16, 1943 in the Pamplico community, she grew up on her parents’ farm, worshiped at Mt. Zion Baptist Church and graduated from Hannah High School where, during her senior year, she scored the winning basketball shot and celebrated with her team the state championship.
She attended Coker College for two years before marrying and, after working in the Dalzell public library and in the Laurens school system while rearing two sons, pursued studies in pharmacy in Spartanburg and Charleston. She graduated from MUSC and enjoyed a 29-year career with Eckerd/Rite-Aid in Lancaster and Columbia. She served her customers with compassion and dedication; many of them stopped in specifically when they spotted her 1974 orange Volkswagen Beetle parked in the lot.
She served in many capacities in the churches and associations where her husband was called. She was active in WMU, prayer groups, choir, and in literacy and children’s ministries. Her missions work led her to join groups serving in West Virginia, Honduras, the Amazon and in southern Brazil.
She was an accomplished cook and enjoyed being outdoors. She harvested many fruits and vegetables from gardens she worked and took great pride in keeping a neat and manicured yard. She also loved walking, bicycling, swimming and hiking.
Survivors include her husband and two sons.
