Frank Page elected SBC Executive Committee president

Frank Page, former pastor of Taylors First Baptist Church and past president of the Southern Baptist Convention, was elected president of the SBC Executive Committee June 4 in Orlando, Fla.

The secret-ballot vote came during a nearly two-hour closed-door executive session in which EC members discussed Page’s nomination and then questioned the candidate.

The announcement came at about 5:30 p.m. when Page was introduced as the EC’s next president, effective Oct. 1.

Page said the questions posed by Executive Committee members were “appropriate” and said there was a “good, sweet spirit” during the question-and-answer time.

Page said he made it clear he had “deep concerns” about some parts of the report of the Great Commission Resurgence Task Force, but said he wants to join SBC president Johnny Hunt in “a call for a real Great Commission Resurgence.”

SBC messengers are scheduled to consider adoption of the GCRTF report on Tuesday afternoon.

Page, a longtime champion of the Cooperative Program, reiterated his support for CP and said the churches he has served have given millions of dollars for CP. “I believe in it,” he said, adding, however, that he “praises God for all giving.”

As EC president, Page said he will “treat all as Jesus people” and would want to be treated the same way.

Page will replace Morris H. Chapman, who is retiring and has been president for 18 years.
