James Henry Mizell, 67, of Round O, a long-serving pastor, died July 22, 2010.
Born Nov. 17, 1942, in Reevesville, he served in the South Carolina National Guard Reserves and earned degrees at Baptist College of Charleston (now Charleston Southern University) and Southeastern Seminary.
In South Carolina, he held pastorates at Zion Baptist, Walterboro; Bethlehem Baptist, Round O; Hopewell Baptist, Parkers Ferry; Edisto Beach Baptist; and at First Baptist, Walhalla, where he served for 18 years until his retirement. He also previously served churches in North Carolina.
At WGOG Radio in Walhalla, he did devotions. He was chaplain for the Walhalla police department and the soil conservation department of Oconee County.
After retiring and moving to Round O, he and his wife moved their church membership to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Walterboro. He authored three devotional books and wrote a weekly devotional column in the Walterboro Press and Standard.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Brenda Byrd Mizell, and his mother.
