North Greenville University celebrated 118 years of existence on Sept. 15 with a Founders Day chapel service.

Ken Hemphill, national strategist for the Southern Baptist Convention’s Empowering Kingdom Growth and former president of Southwestern Seminary, was the keynote speaker.

Founders Day celebrates the establishment and Christian heritage of North Greenville University. The institution was originally formed in 1892 as a high school dedicated to providing educational opportunities for mountain-area students.

“NGU stresses quality education in a biblically sound, Christ-centered environment,” said Hemphill. “Biblically sound education happens when academic and biblical education occur simultaneously.”

Hemphill has served as the director of the Southern Baptist Center for Church Growth and in pastoral positions in Virginia, Kentucky and North Carolina. He has authored 34 books and is a former ACC All-Academic football player at Wake Forest University.

Hemphill currently teaches in the master of Christian ministry program in the T. Walter Brashier Graduate School of North Greenville University.
