Mike Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas and presidential candidate, was guest speaker for a fifth anniversary and fundraising celebration for the Taylors Free Medical Clinic Sept. 28 at Timmons Arena at Furman University.
The faith-based clinic’s mission is to minister to the mind, body and spirit of the medically uninsured and indigent people of the greater Taylors area. It is fully staffed by volunteer physicians, nurses, pharmacists and administrative personnel. When the clinic opened in 2005, it saw 10 patients that evening. To date it has screened and serviced more than 3,000 patients.
Tony Beam, director of the Christian World View Center at North Greenville University, was master of ceremonies for the event. Huckabee was introduced by Frank Page, president of the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention and pastor of Taylors First Baptist Church when the clinic opened as an outgrowth of the church’s Mo-Med Mission trip in 2001.
Huckabee said the clinic “gives hope as well as help to people” in its ministry of “reaching out to bodies, minds and souls.”
