Children celebrate state missions at day camp

Waccamaw Baptist Association Woman’s Missionary Union sponsored its first Children’s Missions Day Camp on Sept. 11 to emphasize state missions.

Kristen Causey works hard to carry a bag filled with 1,350 dimes collected by the children of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Waccamaw Association, for the Janie Chapman missions offering.

The event was hosted by North Conway Baptist Church. The theme was “Opportunity – Respond!”

Louanne Stewart, a North American Mission Board missionary currently serving as ministries and missions development director for Florence Baptist Association, led the children in activities through which they learned about three ministries in South Carolina: school partnerships (Sacks of Love) in Kershaw County, prison ministry (Christmas Prisoner Packet Project), and inviting others to church (Burmese church started at Columbia First Baptist Church).

Children were challenged to respond through increased praying and giving during the Season of Prayer and the Janie Chapman Offering for State Missions. They were also encouraged to pray for missions education and for the state convention’s missional emphasis, Experience Kingdom Life.

Children were asked to bring food items for Churches Assisting People and dimes for the Janie Chapman offering. Victory Baptist Church was recognized for the largest number attending, North Conway Baptist for the most food items collected, and Mt. Olive Baptist for the most dimes collected.

During the program, the children led in prayer and shared personal comments on presentations by the missionary. For the last activity, girls stuffed pillows and boys assembled bird nesting houses. Leaders of age-level organizations from churches throughout Waccamaw Association were on hand to assist them.
