William Crate Murphy, 93, of Anderson, a retired pastor, died Feb. 7, 2011, at Rainey Hospice House.

Born June 30, 1917, in Anderson, he worked as a farmer and carpenter before becoming a Baptist minister. In South Carolina, he served as pastor at New Prospect Baptist Mission Church; Wolf Stake Baptist Church, Seneca; Corinth #2 Baptist Church, Westminster; Pendleton Second Baptist Church; and Townville Baptist Church. He also served churches in Georgia.

After retirement, he was a supply pastor and interim pastor at several churches. He was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church in Anderson.

Survivors include two children, five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son and by his wife, Bertha Hatcher Murphy.
