Singing Churchmen music CD to fund mission projects

The South Carolina Baptist Singing Churchmen, a men’s chorus made up of music ministers serving churches across the state, recently wrapped up a recording session for a new CD to be released in May.

At a recent recording session at Beulah Baptist Church, Hopkins, the South Carolina Baptist Singing Churchmen prepare to sing along to an accompaniment track broadcast through their FM receivers.

The project, “I Will Rise,” will feature hymn settings, vocal jazz arrangements, contemporary Christian radio hits and traditional choral repertory, said Mark Powers, director of the group.

Powers, who also is worship and music director for the South Carolina Baptist Convention, said recording the project at Beulah Baptist Church, Hopkins, “was very interesting and fun, and went very well.”

“We used a digital recording process where the instruments are recorded into the Pro-Tools program on computer as an accompaniment track,” said Powers. “Then we broadcast our recorded instrumental track through an FM signal to individual headphones to each singer. We recorded the vocal tracks three and four times each so that we could overlay vocals for fullness on the recording.”

Song titles include “Immortal Invisible,” “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” “Swinging with the Saints,” “I Will Rise,” “You Never Let Go,” “The Last Words of David” and “Cantate Domino,” among others.

The proceeds from “I Will Rise” will be used to fund future Singing Churchmen mission trips and projects. The group traveled to Taiwan in 2003 and India in 2006. Future trips will include the Washington D.C. area this year, the Dominican Republic in 2012 and Great Britain in 2014.

The CDs, which cost $20, will be available for sale by e-mail (janetaltman@scbaptist.org) or by calling 803-227-6168.
