In the fall of 2008, Brad Caulder began to notice he was having trouble breathing.
Double-lung transplant recipient Brad Caulder shares his testimony at his church. The young husband and father of two small children embarked on a series of tests and subsequent misdiagnoses. He was advised to move out of his home because doctors thought it could be making him sick. It wasn’t. For nearly two years, he was on oxygen and strong intravenous medications 24 hours a day.
He ultimately was diagnosed with pulmonary veno occlusive disease and pulmonary hypertension, a likely fatal combination. In October 2010, he traveled to Duke University Medical Center and received a double lung transplant.
Five months later, he stood in the pulpit of his church, Rockton in Winnsboro, and shared his testimony at the request of interim pastor Steven Bouknight. “We had been doing a series on Sunday mornings on the book of Job entitled, ‘His Story, Your Story,’?” Bouknight said. “Brad shared his story of how he and his family have experienced God’s faithfulness.”
Caulder, who says, medically speaking, “there is no reason I should be alive,” hopes his story will inspire others to find strength in Christ “even when all the odds are against them.”
“God is faithful, no matter the outcome,” he said.
Caulder also hopes others will be inspired to “give the gift of life” and become organ donors.
“As Christians, we have the greatest donor ever,” he said, “and I believe the greatest gift of love we can share is the gift of life to others.”
