What’s New York Without a Yellow Cab?

The Baptist Courier

A yellow taxi made its rounds over the summer to churches around Barnwell County and nearby.

Its trip began in early June at Elko Church. Hearing about LifeWay Christian Resources’ Big Apple Adventure theme for Vacation Bible School, Nancy Jackson, VBS director for Elko Church, envisioned a New York yellow cab.

Children attending VBS at Ashleigh Church, Blackville, sign the VBS taxi.

“My dad has a little business, Sanders Used Cars, and he supplied us with a car,” she said.

Her husband, Mike Jackson, along with their son Derek and daughter Jessica, worked on the run-down Mercedes by washing it, sanding parts and getting bumpers for it, but they left the dents.

They spray-painted the car yellow, cut out squares, purchased black and white spray paint, “and that’s how we did the little checkers all the way around it,” Mike Jackson said.

Once the taxi was complete with a sign on top, it was parked in the front yard at Elko Church June 6-10. At the end of VBS, the children signed the car.

Before the week was over, Nancy Jackson and church members received calls from other churches wanting to borrow the car. The taxi made its first trip to the commencement service June 17 at Seven Pines Church, Snelling. From June 20-24, the VBS taxi sat in the front yard of Ashleigh Church, Blackville. The taxi also traveled to Pleasant Hill Church in Williston, New Harvest in Barnwell and Healing Springs in Blackville.

“Everywhere it goes, the kids are signing it and excited about it,” said Sandra Dobson of Ashleigh Church.

“I’m just glad it could be used multiple times,” Mike Jackson said.
