“I’m going to pray that God helps me find a shiny Pokemon.”

My son Corder and I were spending a little quality time together walking around the South Carolina State House grounds, playing a video game where you find digital personalities in real places.

My quick response was, “Don’t bother God with that. He has more important matters to deal with today.”

“I think He cares,” Corder said. Again, I found myself learning deep theological truths from my 12-year-old son.

One of the most profound truths about the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is that He wants to be in relationship with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and you. Our God wants to know you and to be known by you. Ultimately, His incarnation and execution on a cross fulfilled this desire. We do not have to guess who God is. We only need to look to Jesus and the cross.

God walked with Adam and Eve in the Garden. God walked with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. God walked with Peter, James, and John. His desire is to walk with you, also. Paul explains to Timothy that Scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.

Prayer is communication with God. God is more interested in your posture than your vocabulary. The closer your heart is in line with Jesus, the more likely He will give you the desires of your heart when you ask. He can take your honest communication on tough days. If you are at a loss for words, the Holy Spirit intercedes on your behalf.

You will never believe it. Corder did run into a shiny Pokemon that day. He also ran into the governor and took his picture with him. However, all he has talked about was the time he got to spend with his daddy on a Saturday. That’s all I wanted, too. We will do it again.
