The South Carolina Baptist Convention recently added two staff positions in the church-planting group. Both positions establish regional networkers with local churches and associations as they plant new churches.

Scott Shields began as the Upstate strategist on Nov. 1, and Carl Martin began his work Jan. 2 as the Lowcountry strategist.
“We are excited about adding Scott and Carl to our church-planting team,” said Daryl Price, director of the SCBC church planting group. “We are striving to build a great team to care, connect, and coach our church planters in developing healthy churches that are planting churches. These new staff additions will allow us to serve our planters and multiplying churches with increased attention, while focusing on more rapid church development.”
Shields is a graduate of Mars Hill College and earned a master of religion degree with an emphasis in church growth and church planting from Liberty University. Most recently, he served as an executive pastor at a Baptist church in Asheville, where he oversaw local and regional church planting and missions, including work in the Upstate of South Carolina.
Martin is a graduate of Clemson University, where he served as the first chaplain to the football team in 1982. He holds a master of divinity degree from Southwestern Seminary and a doctorate of ministry in missions from Southeastern Seminary. Martin comes to the SCBC from Crosspoint Church in Bluffton. Crosspoint planted two other churches locally, and more than 30 internationally, under Martin’s leadership.
Shields and Martin were on the East Pickens Baptist Church staff together in the late 1990s.
“Both of these men have strong backgrounds in church planting and are eager to begin connecting with SCBC churches,” Price said. – SCBC
