Letters: Serve Christ, no matter our name

The Baptist Courier

I have to agree that changing a name does not change what we stand for as Southern Baptists. If someone finds out you are Southern Baptist, most will immediately recognize the things you stand for and believe. I wish that more time and money would be spent in reaching out to the lost and unchurched, and to mission outreach. The negative aspects this name change will bring about in the convention will not bring us together as a denomination, and may actually be a detriment. I am almost 80 and have served as a lay person in churches in the “pioneer areas” where SBC work was established in the West, the Midwest and North. Each one of those areas knew what SBC stood for, and most were eager to call themselves a part of it. Most of all, we need to be known as “true Scriptural believers” and ones who share Christ, no matter what the name. That is what we need to improve on.
