It’s official: South Carolina Baptists operate three universities. At its fall meeting Oct. 10-11 at White Oak Conference Center, the Executive Board of the South Carolina Baptist Convention affirmed the decisions by Anderson and North Greenville colleges to seek status as universities.
The board’s vote amends the articles of incorporation of the two schools in response to actions already taken by the trustees of both institutions. Charleston Southern took on university status when its name changed from Baptist College at Charleston.
Decisions to move from college to university status were made by the board of trustees at Anderson in May and at North Greenville in September. At the beginning of the year, both schools will launch graduate programs – Anderson in education, and North Greenville in business and Christian ministry.
Anderson president Evans Whitaker praised the “long and mutual beneficial relationship with Baptists in our state.” As for the Executive Board’s approval, he said, “It is important that South Carolina Baptists partner and celebrate with us as we go forward with the heights outlined in our vision in the institution.”
North Greenville president Jimmy Epting, in the Oct. 6 Courier, said of the change, “It is a new and thrilling day for North Greenville University.”
