In response to Mr. Reeves’ question questioning the need for all the prerequisites for pastors (“Your Views,” Feb. 2), the answer is that it may be because of past experiences with “men of God.” While many churches do want educated, God-called men, unfortunately, there are only a few who are the real thing. It is a local church’s privilege and responsibility to pray and seek God’s will about a pastor.
There should be a higher standard for all church leaders. This is biblical, and it is desperately needed in an age of ever-falling standards, both morally and spiritually. There are too many hirelings and too few “higher-lings.” Jesus established a greater standard than any human ever did and didn’t quit “even unto the death of the cross.” If these requirements are too hard or too high, maybe we should recheck the “calling.”
