Murphy gets creative for children’s sake

While “Today” show viewers might ask: “Where in the world is Matt Lauer?”, people who regularly attend the annual meeting of the South Carolina Baptist Convention are more likely to ponder: “What in the world is Miller Murphy up to?”

“Pit Chief” Miller Murphy

Each year, Murphy, communications director for Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, finds a creative way to get people’s attention. A few years ago, he set up a full-sized swing set. Another year, he built an elaborate electric train set, and grown men with important things to do loitered about the Connie Maxwell booth awaiting their opportunity to have at the controls.

This year, Murphy opted for a NASCAR theme, complete with a race-worn tire from an actual car and a pit-crew jumpsuit emblazoned with Connie Maxwell “sponsorships.”

It’s all about helping folks “feel like a kid again,” Murphy said. “It’s about getting people involved with Connie Maxwell.”

“These kids are loved, and South Carolina Baptists help provide that love. It’s amazing to see what a difference God makes in their lives.”

Murphy invited South Carolina Baptists to visit the Greenwood campus Dec. 1, 2, or 3 for the annual “Connie Maxwell Christmas.” Visitors can view light displays, ride in a horse-drawn wagon, see a live animal nativity display, hear children playing hand bells and more. The event is free.

What in the world will Miller Murphy do at next year’s annual meeting? With a knowing smile and a twinkle, he reveals nothing. “We’re working on it,” he says.
