Weekday educators prepare for ‘Action!’

There were no movie directors in sight, and only the usual lights and cameras, but there was plenty of “Action!” at White Oak Conference Center Aug. 3-4.

In the keynote session on growth and development of children, participants demonstrated ways to get those large muscle groups moving.

The center was the scene of the 2012 Church Weekday Education workshop. The key verse for the workshop was 1 Peter 1:13: “Prepare your minds for action,” and the “Action!” theme played out in movie-related ways, from the class session titles to the table decorations.

The CWE workshop is held annually for teachers and directors in preschool child care centers. This year, 457 teachers and directors from 58 centers across the state attended the workshop.

Participants earned training credits required by the Department of Social Services for licensed or registered child care centers and preschool programs. A variety of sessions were offered – some related to teaching subjects like math or science, some dealing with classroom or behavior management, and others concerning the personal and spiritual development of the teacher.

Keynote speaker was Tommy Comer, associate pastor of First Baptist Church, Gaffney. Comer led the participants in an overview of the growth and development of preschool children. The sessions were spiced with humorous videos and with audience participation elements, including a demonstration of their hula-hooping and rope-jumping skills.

“What sets this workshop apart from other training opportunities for weekday teachers,” said Cindy Morris, director of the childhood ministry group of the South Carolina Baptist Convention, “is that it is Bible-based and taught by Christian leaders. This allows the participants to go back to their centers and teach children out of the overflow of a godly perspective.” – SCBC
