Seminar to help ministers assist with addiction, substance-use disorders

Research has shown that individuals and families suffering with substance-use disorders frequently turn to their church family for help. Too often, however, church leaders don’t feel prepared to assist these individuals and families, and don’t know the resources available in their own communities.

To address these needs, Pavillon Treatment Center based in Mill Spring, N.C., in partnership with Faces and Voices of Recovery (FAVOR) in Greenville, is sponsoring a daylong interdenominational workshop designed for clergy, pastoral counselors, lay ministers and other professionals who want to enhance their ministries and deepen their pastoral relationship with individuals and families impacted by addiction.

Workshop topics – The Science of Addiction: What Pastors Need to Know; Intervention, Treatment and Recovery; Addiction: The Family Disease; and Recovery: A Spiritual Path – will be followed by A Personal Story of Experience, Strength and Hope, and will conclude with a panel discussion on Next Steps: Turning Knowledge into Action.

The workshop is set for Sept. 21 from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at Christ Church Episcopal in Greenville. The cost is $10 per person for lunch, payable at the door (cash and checks only).

Space is limited, and reservations are required by emailing greenvilleinfo@pavillon.org, or by calling 828-694-2300, ext. 108.
