Church historians to gather at South Carolina history center

Church historians from throughout the state, representing various denominations and faiths, will gather for an initial meeting Jan. 14 at the South Carolina Archives and History Center in Columbia.

Indications are that a statewide church historians group may form as a result of this meeting hosted by the South Carolina Archives and History Foundation. As lead historical agency, the South Carolina Department of Archives and History recognizes it may have resources that could be of help to church historians. Holding a formational meeting is also seen as a way to pay tribute to church historians.

A.V. Huff Jr., chairman of the Archives and History Commission and Furman University history professor emeritus, said this initial gathering of church historians is long overdue.

“Local church historians provide a valuable asset in preserving the records of a vital part of our state’s history. They often work alone and with little encouragement. Where help is available, it often comes from denominational organizations. A wider network, provided by the South Carolina Archives and History Center, would be of invaluable assistance to them,” Huff said.

For the exploratory meeting, speakers experienced in areas of interest to church historians will make brief presentations.

Jeannette Bergeron, archivist at Lutheran Southern Seminary, will address the establishment and maintenance of church archives, including materials to be used and resources available.

Archivist Alexia Helseley will speak on the importance of church cemeteries in the history of the church and community.

Discussion of church histories and how to develop them is also expected to be a topic. Church historians are invited to bring a copy of their church’s history to be displayed.

For some church historians, the mid-January gathering will be a first-time visit to the state archives facility. The search room will be open during the day, and professional archivists will be on hand to answer questions.

If the group decides to organize for the purpose of holding future meetings, topics might relate to preservation issues, the application process for becoming listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and placement of historic markers. Planning special historic events, such as centennials, may also be discussed.
