SCBC launches new ministry to pastors’ wives

A Pastors’ Wives Appreciation Dinner to be held Nov. 13 in conjunction with the annual meeting of the South Carolina Baptist Convention in Greenville will mark the launch of a new SCBC ministry.

Susan Hogan, newly appointed pastors’ wives consultant for the SCBC, said ministry to pastors’ and ministers’ wives has been on her heart for a long time.

“A minister’s wife can tirelessly minister to others without ever having someone minister to her,” Hogan said. “In time, this constant giving to everyone around her can begin to take a toll on her health – spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically. This can sometimes affect the health of her marriage and other relationships, as well.

“I am humbled to have the opportunity to develop relationships with these ladies as they seek to be the women God has called them to be. I believe this kind of support is needed and necessary for those who are in roles of leadership and are caregivers themselves.”

Monty Hale, the SCBC’s director of pastoral ministries, said pastors’ wives “are the largest hurting group” in the state convention. “We are happy to provide an understanding, supportive and trained former pastor’s wife to assist these important ladies,” he said.

The Nov. 13 dinner event will be begin at 5 p.m. in Room 202-B of the TD Convention Center in Greenville. Guest speaker will be Kathy Litton, a pastors’ wives consultant for the North American Mission Board. Special music will be provided by Beth Greer of Lexington. To register, call 803-227-6116 or email laurahawley@scbaptist.org.

Hogan holds a master of religious education degree from Southwestern Seminary. She previously served on staff as prayer coordinator at Shandon Baptist Church in Columbia and as a chaplain with Corporate Chaplains of America, serving more than 750 women in the workplace.

She and her husband, Jim, a former pastor who now serves as a corporate chaplain, live in Blythewood and are members of Shandon Baptist Church. They have been married for 33 years and have three children and two grandchildren.
