Exec. Board subcommittee to take up Baptist building employee ‘issues’

The administrative committee of the Executive Board of the South Carolina Baptist Convention issued a report Oct. 12 in response to an assignment from the board to research issues and develop a plan of action regarding employee concerns at the SCBC building in Columbia.

The administrative committee’s report, citing “issues which demand our attention,” was accepted by the Executive Board. The report calls for referring the matter to a subcommittee for further study and to “monitor our Executive Director-Treasurer’s progress.” The subcommittee is expected to report back to the full board in April 2011.

The Executive Board met in a called executive session Aug. 17 at Riverland Hills Baptist Church to review the results of employee “listening sessions,” which were called for by the board last April to address apparent “undercurrents” of concern among SCBC employees.

Following is the full text of the administrative committee’s Oct. 12 report:

Recommendation of Administrative Committee

Submitted to the Executive Board

October 12, 2010

Mr. Chairman and fellow executive board members,

The administrative committee has taken seriously the assignment given to us in August by our board. We fully grasp the importance and significance of this endeavor. We have intentionally not rushed our decisions and conclusions of how to best proceed with this matter. To the best of our ability we have sought to remain as objective as possible, realizing that our highest interest is the health and continued mission of our state convention [and] the churches that form it. While we support both our Executive Director Treasurer and our convention employees, we acknowledge that there are issues which demand our attention. Therefore, we request that our board support and affirm the step we have taken to appoint a sub-committee made up of five members from the administrative committee who will carry out the following assignments:

1. Research the issues

2. Develop a written plan alongside our Executive Director Treasurer to address the issues and implement this plan as soon as possible

3. Monitor our Executive Director Treasurer’s progress

4. Report back to the Administrative Committee and Executive Board in April, 2011

The members of the sub-commitee are:
