In Rock Hill: Park Baptist Church celebrates 100 years

Members of Park Baptist Church, Rock Hill, celebrated 100 years of ministry on Sept. 16. The congregation’s first 50 years were retraced by Alma Steele and Ella Ramsey during the early service, and its past 50 years were recounted by Max Phillips during the 11 a.m. service.

Park Baptist began in 1907 as a Sunday school outreach of First Baptist Church. The 35 members met in a loaned house for two years, before they built a sanctuary on North Jones Avenue.

In 1948, the congregation moved to its current location on East Main Street, occupying what is now the educational facility. The current sanctuary was completed in 1952.

Fifteen pastors have served Park Baptist since it started in 1907, and the church has grown to more than 600 members. Randy Hatcher is the current pastor.

“It is always a good thing to look back and to look at what God is doing right now,” Hatcher told a reporter for The Spartanburg Herald. “We are going to continue to move on and tell people that God loves them.”
