Greenville Baptists assist Virginia prom dress ministry

Greenville Baptist Association has collected previously worn prom dresses to donate to junior and senior high school girls in Lee County, Va., one of the five poorest areas in the nation.

Greenville Association began partnering with Powell River Baptist Association in Lee County seven years ago, donating items and doing aid work. Last October, when Greenville Association representatives were in Lee County to deliver some needed items, they heard of an unusual ministry opportunity.

“Many girls in Lee County aren’t able to attend their high school prom because they are unable to afford a dress,” said Wanda Bridwell, missions team assistant for Greenville Association.

The prom dress ministry in Lee County started last season with donations from nearby Roanoke Baptist Association and from churches in Greenville, but this marks the first year that Greenville Association has taken a lead role.

Alma Reasor, a spokesperson for Powell River Association, said it’s a rewarding experience to see the girls try on their prom dresses. “It’s a joyous time for both the girls and their parents, and I expect the same this year,” she said.

The main reason for Lee County’s poverty is the decline of the coal-mining industry, which was the primary source of employment for the area. “For the last 10 years, unemployment has risen steadily, and I can see it getting worse,” said Reasor.

Greenville Association was able to collect about 90 dresses and deliver them on March 17. The number of dresses received was a surprise. “For a first-time ministry, the success exceeded my expectations,” said Bridwell. “The excitement and enthusiasm of the churches involved was very encouraging.”

Reasor expressed gratitude for all the aid churches from Greenville Association have given, and still give, to Lee County. “They always provide what we ask for and have never failed us,” she said.
